Samuel Dennis White was born on March 9, 1818, in Parishville, New York. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1837 and in 1841 married Mary Hannah Burton in Nauvoo, Illinois. After stopping for a time in Garden Grove, Iowa, the Whites traveled to Utah in 1850, and spent the next several years working on the Cedar City settlement.
